Buzzards Bay 42 layout
Great Room
The Buzzards Bay 42 features the familiar fully enclosed Buzzards Bay pilot house design. As you enter the pilot house via a trawler style water tight door from the cockpit, you will notice how big a 42 foot yacht can be. Measuring aproximately 15 feet (4.5M) long and 13 feet (4M) wide, the pilot house is designed with a "great room" layout, placing the galley, dining, and lounging areas in one room. Just inside the pilot house door to starboard is a U-shaped galley. The galley design features plenty of counter space, storage, and a drawer style fridge. The aft position of the galley makes it very convenient for servicing the cockpit. Forward of the galley is a large dinnette with seating for five adults around a gloss finished hardwood table. Across from the galley is a generous home style L-shaped couch with extra thick, well upholstered cushions. Forward in the pilot house and on centerline is the helm, with large dash area for dual 15" electronic displays, and a commanding 360 degree view. Just to port of the helm is the co-pilot area. The co-pilot space has a wrap around counter perfect for cruising guides and charts, and forward the dash area is cut away to improve visibility for passengers.
Unlike the Buzzards Bay 34, whose pilot house floor sits directly on the hull tunnel, the 42's pilot house floor is raised up off of the tunnel by 2 feet. This raises your seated and standing eye level in relation to the bow and lower window lines, greatly improving visibility all around. A side benefit of this design is all that space between the tunnel and raised pilot house floor is available for storage, mechanical equipment, and easier routing of wiring and plumbing. Further visibility improvments have been made through more advanced engineering of the deck laminate to allow for thinner spacing between the windows, thus improving sight lines.
Ventilation abounds on the Buzzards Bay 42. Through multiple overhead hatches and opening windows and doors, we can offer passengers fly-bridge levels of ventilation to the pilot house, allowing passengers the ability to custom tailor their needs to match the environement. When outside conditions are not desirable, you can close up the windows, doors, and hatches, and simply turn on the standard 32,000 btu reverse cycle air conditioning and heat system for precise temperature and humidity control.
Innovative Companionway Design
By virtue of a catamarans natural twin hull configuration, all cats have two companionways leading down into each hull. In every design we've ever come across, these stair wells are open to the salon, the main actvity center of the boat, creating an ever present danger for inadvertabdly falling down these steep openings. With the Buzzards Bay 42, we found a better way, by simply removing the companionways alltogethor from the high traffic salon. To go below decks, you walk forward, past the helm to an athwarthship (cross vessel) passage, and from there you decend down a set of proper stairs designed with home style tread heights. What about the space lost by the athwarthsip passage? This has been minimized by placing the passage way at the very base of the pilot house sloping front windshield, and being two steps lower than the pilot house floor, the passage way has proper head room that would be unavailable otherwise, so a pretty good design without much compromise made.
Below Decks
In the starboard hull forward is the master stateroom, similar in style and design to the Buzzards Bay 34's, just a whole lot bigger. An island style king size berth is laid athwartships (cross vessel) and features the same flip up storage access as proven on the 34. Forward in the stateroom is a very large floor to ceiling closet that is not quite a walk-in design, but its close. The master stateroom is outfitted tastefully with a combination of hardwood trim, paneling, and soft wall covers. Ventilation and light is brought in courtesy of a large overhead hatch, and two opening port lights.
Aft of the master stateroom in the starboard hull is the head, featuring a very large seperate shower stall, electric flush toilet with fresh water flushing, vanity with large vessel sink, and a storage cabinet for towels and toiletries. Guests can access this head without disturbing the master stateroom, so the 42 can be built with just one head for simplicity, however a second head is an option.
In the port hull going forward is the guest stateroom. Here, guests have a queen berth, oriented fore and aft, with substantial stowage below the matress. An ensuite hanging locker, bookshelf, and two are part of the standard outfitting of this space.
Though custom inner spring mattresses are available, we've had really good experiences with our standard spec mattress design, which Bristol Cushions makes for us using a custom lamination of various densities of PU foam plus memory foams. Both the master and guest berths use this type of matress.
Bonus Room
Decision, decisions, decisions....with the Buzzards Bay 42, we have been able to give you a major customization space that we call, for lack of a better term, the Bonus Room. Residing below decks in the port hull, aft of the guest stateroom, the bonus room is almost as large as the master head. We anticipate most customers will use this space to create a guest head, third stateroom, or perhaps a utility room.
