Buzzards Bay Green
Not Just Greener.....Better!
Our small company is comprised of a young group of designers, engineers, craftsmen, and business people working on Cape Cod, MA. Through our efforts we have developed the Buzzards Bay line of power catamarans for the recreational yachtsmen and commercial work boat markets. Our boats are not just greener; they have proven to be better, with fuel efficiency improvements of 50 to 75% over traditional designs while also providing superior performance and capability. We build our vessels with a much greener process called resin infusion that nearly eliminates the release of ozone depleting chemicals usually emitted through standard composite construction practices.
We have been able to create our green product, built in a green way without compromise in any area of performance and we believe that is the key point. Most green technologies have had little appeal because they require the customer to alter their behavior in some way. Many of those against green initiatives simply will not let their lives be affected in order to go green. Our product does not ask them to make that choice. Instead of focusing on being green, we have focused on the needs and desires of our customer, and of coarse the need to be profitable as a business. Buzzards Bay power catamarans do burn less fuel making them much greener than the status quo, but the immediate benefit to our customer is that they cost much less to operate. We build our boats with a resin infusion process, not because it is greener, (though that is a bonus) but because it allows us to build a stronger, lighter boat, with a higher level of quality control, and a significantly improved work environment for our people. We did all this because we thought it would create a more desirable boat than the competition.
There are many new procedures and technologies in the world to reduce waste and emissions, but in order to truly help the environment they must satisfy two criteria; first, they must be a better mouse trap in order to be adopted willingly by the consumer, and secondly the business model must be profitable in order to be sustainable, as total dependence on government funds can only be temporary.
Green technologies that offer true advantages are a common ground for all of us on both sides of the aisle. They don’t have to be a part of the “Us versus Them” debate that is raging on right now. And we don’t have to be either.
